FALCONS

Peregrine Falcon

  • Perhaps the best known raptor associated with falconry.
  • Various peregrine hybrids are flown by falconers.
  • Extirpated from the Eastern U.S. in th 1960's due to egg shell thinning from DDT.
  • Removed from the U.S. Endangered Species List in 2000 due to successful breeding and reintroduction efforts by the Peregrine Fund, state agencies, and falconers.
  • Prized by falconers for their speed, agility, and natural tendency to "wait on" from a high position.
  • Exclusively hunt birds
