Watching Falconry In Ohio

Falconry offers a fascinating glimpse into the unique partnership between humans and raptors. Whether through observing hunts in the field or attending educational presentations, there are opportunities to learn more about this ancient and challenging practice.

Hunts and Meets

Falconry is a deeply personal relationship between a falconer and their hawk. Hawks are highly attuned to their handlers and may notice and react differently to the presence of unfamiliar spectators. This can sometimes affect their focus or willingness to hunt. For this reason, many falconers prefer to limit the number of spectators at hunts or field meets.

Additionally, hunting activities are restricted to the fall and winter months, when game is in season and weather conditions are suitable for both hawks and falconers.

That said, the Ohio Falconry Association (OFA) welcomes interested and prepared individuals to attend select hunts to observe hawks in action. Please keep in mind:

  • Hunting often requires trekking over rough terrain, through dense cover, and in challenging weather conditions.
  • Spectators should wear durable clothing to protect against brambles and exposure.
  • Proper preparation and physical fitness are essential to fully enjoy and safely participate as a spectator.

Educational Presentations

Licensed falconers in Ohio occasionally participate in public educational events, providing opportunities to learn about falconry up close. These events may include:

  • Slide shows and lectures.
  • Meet-and-greet opportunities with falconers and their hawks.

Note: Hawks are not free-flown at educational presentations. The emphasis is on education and awareness, rather than hunting demonstrations.

OFA members may agree to provide presentations for schools, community groups, or organizations, depending on travel distance and the condition of their hawk(s). However, it is important to note that:

  • Falconers in Ohio cannot accept payment for presentations.
  • Requests may not always be fulfilled due to the small number of licensed falconers available for such activities.

If you would like to request an educational presentation for a classroom, group, or event, please contact the OFA at info@ohiofalconry.org. We will do our best to connect you with a falconer in your area, but availability may vary.
